I always knew I would return to education, but I never imagined that I would gain a Master’s Degree 😳. It’s been a long and tricky road at times and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support from my (now) husband and some of the wonderful people I met along the way, some of whom will be lifelong friends (or raccoons 🦝) 🥰. I’m so incredibly proud of myself and had a really wonderful day graduating in the hallowed chambers at the Oxford Union yesterday.

I met this gorgeous little carrion crow on my travels this week. She’s in rescue as she was hit by a car and has a broken wing and has lost most of her vision in one eye. She will be rehomed as a pet once she is well again. Apparently they are super intelligent and make awesome pets! This little lady already sits on the sofa and watches tv with the dog! Heart ❤️

Dizzy jumped everything I pointed her at 😇, despite an unplanned dismount in the collecting ring prior to jumping even one fence 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂. Wow. Well. The last exam of my first year of my McTimoney Chiropractic Masters Degree done ✅. Halfway there! Whilst I’ve loved learning so much more about animals theoretically and practically, I won’t lie, I’m glad the studying is over for a couple of months. I’ve also recently submitted my Prototcol, which is the first part of my Master’s Thesis, which I’m doing on the effect of Fenwick Liquid Titanium Masks and relaxation in horses. I know it works for my Dizzy-as featured in the photo, but I’m interested to see if there is a scientific angle to them. Watch this space!!

🚨 Dizzy spam! 🚨 Wow. I can’t believe I’m actually writing this. We have just completed our first solo hack without even coming close to dying 😍. Some of you will know how this seemed an impossible dream for me not all that long ago. I’m so so proud of my girl and myself for putting on my brave pants. So what is fascia? And what does it mean when it ‘releases’ during a massage? Fascia is a thin, sheet of tissue that covers, surrounds, and protects every structure in the body. Fascia has several forms: Cobweb, honeycomb, and ribbon are a few. 🕸 Cobweb fascia is mainly associated with the internal organs. 🍯 Honeycomb fascia is mainly associated with the blood vessels, bones, nerves and muscles 🎀 Ribbon fascia is what lives directly under the skin In all it’s various shapes, forms, and roles, it is literally what holds everything in the body together to create functional movement. During all soft tissue work with a horse, we are always addressing the fascia. When we say we feel muscle sore, it is usually actually our fascia that gives us that sensation. Horses are the same. The muscles stretched too much too fast, and the fascia didn’t have time to release and catch up. When we say we have injured a muscle, its - again- commonly the fascia that has been injured, not the tissue that is the actual muscle. Fascia has many layers that are meant to hold fluid, to increase glide across each other. Problems occur when an area of fascia gets injured, stuck or dried out, and stops gliding so easily. The superficial fascia of the body is like a sweater. A “snag” will pull form all other areas of the body just like of you snag your sweater and the thread tightens from all angles. Also, most of our nerves run along fascia, and there are about six times more nerve receptors in fascia than in any other parts. When we feel pain, its often from the nerves entrapped within the fascial layers that have for some reason become dry or stuck. Healthy fascia = a healthy horse. One of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain healthy fascia is to intentionally brush your horse every day. Move your brush in all directions, not just the direction of the hair. Take your time and spend 5-10 minutes brushing. Another really effective and simple way to maintain healthy fascia is to do 20 minutes of intentional walking. Try some slopes, hills, or poles to keep their mind engaged. Healthy fascia = a healthy horse.

It’s all about the studying for now, until I go out to treat some of my gorgeous regular clients later this afternoon 🙌🏼 As an MSc student in animal Chiropractic, I have to do a lot of studying of bones 🦴. How they are formed, as well as their individual functions and related muscles. I also have to know associated pathologies. I’m currently looking at pathologies of bone in dogs 🐶 before I move onto bone and joint pathologies in horses. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to treat the handsome Simba this morning. He’s a beautiful and bouncy Labradoodle. He came for a maintenance treatment with no issues, however I notice he walked with quite a curve to the right when assessing him. After his treatment, he was walking straight, to the extent his Grandad noticed he was walking differently when he got home.
